Reddit spam tries to influence AI search answers

Brands and agencies are trying to use Reddit mentions to appear in AI-generated answers. The pressure on volunteer-moderated communities shows how AI search is changing the value of online mentions.

Summary

Reddit is becoming a more valuable target for promotional spam because AI tools and search products powered by generated answers frequently cite discussions from the platform. According to data compiled by Semrush for The Verge, Reddit was the most-cited domain in May by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Mode.

The practical consequence is straightforward: for some brands, getting links from well-ranked pages is no longer the only objective. An apparently organic mention in a forum can become valuable if it is used by an AI answer or search summary.

In practice

The Verge describes cases in skincare, weight loss, durable shopping, restaurant and indie music subreddits where moderators say they have detected suspicious accounts, promotional comments and campaigns disguised as normal participation. In some cases, communities have started filtering brand names or requiring commercial entities to identify themselves clearly.

This makes moderation harder. Promotional content no longer needs obvious links, tracking codes or clear advertising language. It can appear as open-ended questions, personal recommendations or comments that repeat product names with unusually precise wording.

Context

The issue sits at the intersection of SEO, AEO and GEO: optimisation for search engines, answer engines and generative systems. As Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and other products summarise information instead of only sending traffic to pages, brands and agencies are trying to influence which names, products and sources appear in those summaries.

Reddit says it is strengthening automated detection with AI and LLMs. In a July 2026 post, the company said it was catching around 25,000 new spammy posts and comments per day and blocking 23 million spam views per day. Even so, moderators remain central, especially when manipulation is subtle and depends on each community's context.

Why it matters

  • AI search increases the commercial value of apparently informal mentions in forums and communities.
  • Trust in user-generated content may weaken if readers suspect recommendations are disguised campaigns.
  • Volunteer moderators are placed in a more sensitive position because they protect communities that have also become valuable to brands, agencies and AI systems.
  • For companies, the pressure to appear in AI answers creates strong incentives for tactics that are difficult to audit.
